No Such Thing as Bad Luck

“Bad Luck” is a phrase thrown around a lot. People really invest in it. Misfortune hovers over them as the infamous, dark cloud. It follows behind wherever they go like a stray dog. It guides their lives and decides their mood at a moment’s notice. It’s the reason things go bad and the common denominator when mistakes are made. On the rare occasion when things are going good, don’t worry bad luck is on the way.

Where does this bad luck come from? Did the Gods huddle up on Mt. Olympus conspiring how to ruin your morning? Or is the entire cosmic reality sending a flat tire toward you? Well both of those explanations sound as ridiculous as they do indulgent. Zeus would have better things to do…probably. The Universe is literally moving mountains and shooting stars; you're not a priority. Just like you aren’t a priority, you are not a target. What you are is alive.

You’re living, and living comes with conditions you might have skipped over in the fine print. Included are mortality, inadequacy, and endless pain to name a few. So “Bad Luck” is an oversimplification. A diversion from life’s cruel realities. You don’t have bad luck, you have life. For better or worse, for however long it decides. Moments will suck and life will always be unfair. Most importantly there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it.

As Frank Sinatra said That’s Life. Fortunately, you have plenty of work to do with no limit on how much you can improve. Focus on that instead. The cloud will lighten up and the dog might become your best friend.
